Summer is here!

Summertime bike riding in the country

Summer’s here and with it come days of fun, whether gardening or enjoying time with your family. However, if you are over 65 you’ll want to take special precautions to protect yourself from the heat.

Many people over 65 are particularly prone to heat stress. In part, it’s aging. But many chronic medical conditions affect the body’s responses to heat as well. And prescription medicines may also impair your body’s ability to regulate temperature.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy the summer while protecting yourself from the heat:

  • Drink cool, non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated drinks
  • If your doctor limits your fluid intake or you are on water pills, ask him how much you should drink in hot weather
  • When the weather is hot, don’t engage in strenuous outdoor activities
